Beemster® cheese forerunner in sustainable and healthy
July 12, 2019
In Questionmark's Kaaswijzer, Beemster® young cheese has been declared a "frontrunner in sustainable & healthy". For the Kaaswijzer, Questionmark compared twenty-four young cheeses from Dutch supermarkets on sustainability indicators environmental and animal welfare. The transparency of producers about their efforts also weighed in. Beemster® finished at the top of the Questionmark Kaaswijzer, making it an absolute frontrunner in cheese-making.
Proud of more than 10 years of sustainability efforts
"This award is a great compliment for our farmers who have been participating in our sustainability program Caring Dairy for more than 10 years. With great care and attention to animal welfare, or in other words: healthy and happy cows. Of course, 100% outdoor grazing is part of this. Our farmers grow 70% of the feed for the cow on their own land. In addition to being dairy farmers, many of our farmers are also agricultural nature managers and suppliers of renewable energy. A rightful appreciation from Questionmark for our farmers!", Grietsje Hoekstra, sustainability manager at CONO Kaasmakers, makers of Beemster® cheese proudly tells us.
Most sustainable cheese brand
Beemster® cheese has a name to uphold when it comes to sustainability. In April of this year, Dutch consumers voted Beemster® cheese the most sustainable cheese brand in the Sustainable Brand Index. The award from Questionmark is a fine confirmation of this. For us, making premium cheese not only means great taste, but also premium animal welfare and the environment. Sustainability will also be a priority in the future.
