Tosti hacks

So how do you make the perfect sandwich? With these tips and tricks, you can (almost) not go wrong anymore ;-).

In the sandwich iron or in the pan?

Opinions are divided on this and both have different properties. Do you fry your sandwich in the pan? Then preferably use a heavy frying pan with a thick bottom. Preheat the pan well and then put your toasted sandwich in it. of course you go for a golden brown outside and well melted cheese inside. Sometimes the outside is already dark brown while the cheese is not yet well melted. You can solve this by placing a sheet of baking paper and something heavy, such as another pan, on top of the sandwich. That way the cheese melts better.

In a sandwich iron or grill, the sandwich often cooks just a little faster. However, keep in mind that the sandwich will be a bit flatter and more compact as the sandwich is compressed.

Especially for sandwiches with few other ingredients, this is still a great way too. A wrap or pita sandwich is also very good to make in a sandwich iron, try it!

Spread the outside with butter or mayo

To make your sandwich nice and crispy, spread the slices on the outside with mayo or butter. This will give the sandwich a nice golden brown color and make it nice and crispy.

Can't choose? Then do both. Mayo on the outside of the sandwich for extra flavor and then fry it in the pan in a little butter to make it extra creamy.

This is how you get the crispiest sandwich

Can't get it crispy enough for you? Then we have just the tip for you. Fry your sandwich in the pan on one side and then flip it. After about 2 minutes add a small, we repeat small, splash of water to the pan and cover it with a lid or other pan. The steam released will make your sandwich even crispier. Guaranteed crunch with every bite.

Here's how to avoid a sticky or wet sandwich

Everyone knows it, to vary a bit with your sandwich recipes you top your sandwich with some tomato slices. Only the result is that your sandwich gets a little soggy on one side. You can avoid this by wrapping the "wet" ingredient between the cheese. So first spread a slice of bread with cheese, then with tomato, for example, and then with cheese again and finally another slice of bread. This will keep your sandwich nice and warm and the bread crispy.

Bonus tip: tomato is not the only ingredient you can put between your toasts, try, for example, a slice of pickle, onion or for those who like to experiment: kimchi.

Choose the right bread

Of course you can vary endlessly with the ingredients you use for your sandwich but don't forget the bread. Choose hearty sourdough bread, dark brown multigrain or go for the good old casino white. Each type of bread gives a different flavor in combination with the ingredients you choose. We recommend just choosing what you like. A tip: choose a bread with few holes, otherwise the cheese will run out and we don't want that 😉 .

Want to try something new for once? Then make a sandwich on a wrap, pita or flatbread.

Toast for true cheese lovers

Can't get enough of cheese and so you belong to team "never enough cheese on your toasted sandwich"? Then make your toasted sandwich in the pan and cook on 2 sides. When the sandwich is ready lift it up with the spatula and place a slice of cheese in the hot pan. Place the sandwich on top of the slice of melted cheese and fold the edges around the sandwich with the spatula. This way you not only have little cheese crusts to snack on but you have created an XXL cheese crust.

Oven toast

Do you have your sandwich topped double thick and the cheese just doesn't seem to melt? Then place it briefly in a preheated oven at 180 degrees Celsius after you have fried it in the pan. That way you can be sure the cheese melts nicely.
