Beemster cheese most sustainable cheese brand in the Netherlands!

Consumers have voted Beemster cheese the most sustainable cheese brand in the Netherlands. According to Sustainable Brand Insight, more and more consumers consider sustainability important. The recently published Sustainable Brand Index shows the high appreciation for Beemster cheese.

"We are proud that our sustainability efforts are recognized by consumers," responded Evert Kremer, farmer and president of the small farmer cooperative in the Beemster polder. "At Beemster cheese, we are working hard to become increasingly sustainable. We have been working with the Caring Dairy program on our farms for 10 years. With a lot of care and attention to animal welfare, or in other words: healthy and happy cows. 100% outdoor grazing is part of this, of course. Many of our farmers also have projects for biodiversity, meadow bird management and producing sustainable energy."

Sustainability is also a high priority at the cheese factory in the Beemster polder. "When we built our new cheese factory, we made a promise," says director Wim Betten. "We built the greenest cheese factory in the world and from 2020 we will make cheese climate-neutral. Another great step forward in our sustainable ambitions."

"We want to show how well our farmers are doing. They are among the best farmers in the world when it comes to animal welfare and CO2 reduction. That could be said a little more often!" said Wim Betten. "For us, making premium cheese not only means great taste, but also premium animal welfare and environment. Sustainability will also be a priority for the future."
